Promoting health equity in our communities and beyond

At the Miller School, our community is our compass, and our emphasis on well-being is rooted in the principles of equity and inclusion. We serve one of the most diverse populations in the world. This positions us to treat patients respectfully across different cultures and ethnicities, provide exceptional evidence-based treatment to those who need it most, and enable our medical students to gain crucial experience caring for a far more heterogenous demographic than they would at other schools.

Our deep community connections have also provided critical insight into treating and containing novel diseases. We were part of the front-line battle against the Zika virus in Miami, which prepared our researchers to combat the COVID-19 virus through the rapid development and implementation of effective diagnostic tests, treatment options, and clinical trials. Your support will further our mission to eliminate health inequities, prepare for future pandemics, and bolster our high-quality community programs.

Fundraising priorities:

  • The University of Miami Precision Medicine Initiative (U-PROMISE) will enable our physicians to tailor therapies to the genomic and environmental factors specific to each of our patients.
  • Expansion of research and treatment programs will focus on addiction, HIV, cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and other illnesses that threaten our communities.
  • Formation of the University of Miami Well-Being Institute (U-WIN) will help residents find new ways to access treatment, public health information, and wellness initiatives—as well as the expansion of existing, successful programs focused on well-being.
  • Enhancing the Miller School’s capacity for discovering genetic predispositions to certain illnesses in the diverse populations that we serve is key to enabling us to share our knowledge with medical systems around the country and provide a window into the future of health care in the United States.
