Expanding the canon
Though the Western canon includes shortcomings in terms of equity, equality, and pluralism, recognized masterworks provide a launching pad for open and frank conversations about cultural paradigms and the power of art.
However, the critical examination of the Western canon alone is not enough in terms of a full commitment to diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and social justice. Thus, the Lowe will work with community partners to expand the canon by highlighting and exploring masterworks from non-Western cultures that, heretofore, have been overlooked.
